Marcel Duchamp's "Fountain" (1917) has become an art world icon, after anticipating the genre now called Conceptual Art by about fifty years. Duchamp, together with several other artists and art lovers, founded the Society of Independent Artists, which arranged its first exhibit, non-jury, to open on April 10, 1917.
