He was first mentioned as a possible Presidential candidate in 1968, but ended up supporting Richard Nixon. A darling of the Republican conservative wing, he did run against Gerald Ford in the 1976 primaries, which he lost. He won decisively over Jimmy Carter in 1980 (Ranney, 30-31).

He is best known for his efforts to rebuild the U.S. military and confront the Soviet Union, which eventually led to the downfall of an overstretched Soviet state and the end of the Cold War in 1989-90.

Walter Mondale of Minnesota was a moderate liberal from Minnesota and a protege of Hubert Humphrey when he entered politics. After serving as State Attorney General he ran for the Senate and won. In 1976, having entered the Democratic primaries that year, he was taken on the Democratic ticket as Vice President under Jimmy Carter.
