Ultimately, after the death of Lady Madeline, Usher's condition deteriorates. He can take no noise or color or light and grows increasingly feverish. After his sister has been interred for eight days in the tomb below the house, a furious storm battles the house and a pounding is heard from below. Usher's death comes about as the ultimate climax to perhaps his imagination's worst fears -- burying someone alive and that person coming back for him (Poe in Roberts, 2000).

The atmosphere of fear, built upon by Poe using the effects of color and sound and light (or lack thereof), crashes down in a dramatic finish then.
