ADHD And Methylphenidate

. Data were gathered and compared with a 6-week placebo-controlled medication assessment. Participants received double blind, crossover trials of three doses of the medication. Note-taking quality, quiz and worksheet scores, written language use and productivity, teacher ratings of behavior, and homework completion were outcome measures. Findings showed that methylphenidate resulted in positive effects on academic measures with the greatest benefit associated with the lowest dose. Additional benefit due to higher doses was not found and in some cases the added dose resulted in deterioration of behaviors. Findings also showed that the greatest changes in disruptive behaviors occurred between placebo and 10-mg MPH doses (small dose). The authors concluded that MPH is effective for treatment of adolescents with ADHD, improving social and academic outcomes
