ight stories plus activities. Each class will spend a three week period reading the stories and completing practice skill sheets related to each of the books in the unit. These practice skill sheets will be used to establish a baseline reading comprehension score for each student in the two classrooms. To assess the relative efficacy of the evaluation processes, students in the group assessed via criterion-referenced mastery tests will be asked at the end of each unit to complete the mastery test. Students in the "retelling" group will, at the end of each unit, be given individual opportunities to retell or recall what was read. This think-aloud assessment will be scored by the teacher. At the end of the six-week unit, scores of students in both groups will be computed and results compared.

The materials used will consist of a basal reading program targeting sixth grade students. A single unit of materials will be presented, consisting of six to eight stories plus associated activities.
