Advertising Images

The key to a successful advertising image is often in the details. That means more than just a single item. And here, oin this Buell Motorcycles ad, you get the idea right away that this is not just any ordinary cycle. You see the rider, all togged out in sports gear (and safety helmet of course. What you see is a wide open space, an interstate or some sort of superhighway, with an overpass in the background, all framed against a brilliant clear blue sky. Perfect motorcycle weather! The ad literally takes you for the thrill of the curves in a wide open countryĆ .You don't really know if it's in the U.S. or somewhere else. It really doesn't matter, since Buells are sold internationally.

What is interesting is that while the ad talks about a winding road, it is not the usual mountainous winding roads that so many automobile ads show, with wet glistening pavement to make the cars appear cleaner. Here the idea of "sporty" really comes through, as well. No fancy attachments to this Buell model, unlike so many Harley Davidsons (same company!) which have all sorts of chrome attachments and custom add-ons.

The ad talks about "street-wise senses" and one feels the speed of this sporty Buell. It is interesting to note that the motorcycle is shown making a curve, and not racing down some straightaway, again, in keeping with the idea of torque models on a winding roadway.

One can make up a good story about this picture: A lone rider, wanting to get away from it all. He's a school teacher in a very conservative home town, and this is the weekend. This seems to be his chance to let go, to get out of town and on a road that at this time is not heavily traveled. In fact, if any cars or trucks were visible, it would spoil the whole image of a loner, heading to no specific destination. Obviously, he's not going on a trip.
