Although it is difficult to have an absolutely clear perspective on the events of 9-11 because they are relatively recent and still being defined and interpreted, in general American history is a history that has been written by men, according to male politics and military endeavors. It requires a great deal of diligence to understand America's past according to women and their experiences. Even literature was only published by men, and women who wanted to publish their perspective had to use a male pseudonym. Recent probes into the CIA's knowledge of pre 9-11 events are efforts to find out what was known and what was ignored.

Some of the methods of control in 1984 are brainwashing, the constant presence of the telescreens, no privacy, the invention of the language Newspeak and its constant updating to take out the emotional components of language, prohibitions of recreational passion and sex, and ultimately arrest, torture and death. Even the seemingly simple act of buying a blank journal and starting a diary is considered forbidden. It was not illegal, "but if detected it was reasonably certain that it would be punished by death, or at least by twenty-five years in a forced labor camp" (Orwell 6). Every bit of individuality and independent thought was systematically stamped out of the people, making them into robotic automatons who could efficiently be of service to the government.

The Thought Police were vigilant in finding people who were acting different or even slightly rebellious. Winston knew as he wrote DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER that the Thought Police would get him for his thoughtcrime.
