As a result of this creation of a homeland for Israel in Palestine, the dispute between these two groups of people for the control of the same piece of land has become more bitter and violent. Each side considers the other a mortal threat to its existence. Both sides have become so entrenched in their opposition to each other that they have become enemies with whom there can be no compromise, only eventual annihilation.

The conflict is multi-layered, inter-weaving religious beliefs, political posturing, and possession of the historically sacred land into a virtual Gordian knot. The Israelis believe that they have a right to a national homeland in the area historically known as Palestine. The Palestinians have owned and occupied the same land for centuries and played no part in the Holocaust.
