Origins of the Goths and Their Migrations

The Goths originated in Scandinavia and migrated across the Baltic to the upper Vistula in the first century A.D. By the mid-2nd century the Goths were on the move southwards into southern Poland and the Ukraine. By 200 they came into contact with the Romans along the northern frontier of Dacia. By the mid-4th century, they dominated the entire region along the north coast of the Black Sea from the Don River eastward into the Balkans where they eradicated or assimilated other nomadic tribes and assumed control of ancient Greek port cities. They were principally attracted by more fertile land in the southern forested steppes and access to the profitable trade up and down the rivers leading to the Black Sea.
