The UN through its United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) became involved in posting observers on Israel's borders to monitor the armistices resulting from the 1948 and 1956 wars. Although the UNEF was withdrawn in May 1967 at Gamal Nasser's request, a reconstituted UN observer force, the United Nations Disengagement and Observer Force (UNDOF), was established under the Israeli-Syrian Separation of Forces agreement of May 1974 to supervise and inspect the mutual withdrawal of forces from the Golan Heights. Another UN force, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), was established in 1978 to prevent Palestinian terrorist attacks into northern Israel from Lebanon. Ever since 1949, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) has provided housing, food and education for Palestinian refugees in camps in the Gaza Strip, Lebanon, Jordan and other Arab countries.
