In the 1950s, a series of medical and scientific reports documented more convincingly than before the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer, emphysema and other serious ailments. In the meantime, Big Tobacco in its advertising disingenuously promoted the beneficial health aspects of smoking. Based on experiments with mice, medical reports by physician Ernst Wynder and thoracic surgeon Evarts Graham in the January 1950 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (AMA) established a strong connection between heavy and prolonged cigarette smoking and lung cancer as did similar British medical reports. According to Kluger, it became known much later that R.J. Reynolds researcher Claude Teague in 1953 wrote a report for management in which he said: "studies of clinical data tend to confirm the relationship between heavy and prolonged tobacco smoking and incidence of cancer of the lung."
