vancing the cause of freedom and peace, in developing and executing domestic and foreign policy, and then elaborates on this feature of hope in Kennedy's leadership;

Above all, he was a builder of hope---new hope for peace and freedom and our fellow man, new hope for our nation and all the world. . . . In death as in life, John Kennedy stirred the hearts of all mankind (Kennedy 7-8).

Of course, the mention of Kennedy's death brings to mind the shock the nation and world felt at his assassination. This is certainly the sign of a leader of people---that the people miss him so terribly and feel so leaderless when he is suddenly taken from them. Allan Nevins, in his Introduction to The Burden and the Glory, notes the response of the nation at the murder of their leader president kennedy:

A sense of spaciousness was taken out of American life, a feeling that the nation's future was shot through with imagination and hope disappeared, and an exhilarating absorption in the adventures before us was lost. . . . The first President born in the new century, he died at the height of his powers (Kennedy 9).

Still, this sense of loss, this sense of momentary hopelessness, could have been engendered by the mere style of Kennedy's youthful and vibrant leadership. Did he truly accomplish anything of substance that would justify the conclusion that he was a leader in reality as much as he was in the imagination of the nation and the world? This study will give evidence that he was indeed a substantial and accomplished leader who had taken decision action to help lead the nation and world into a more peaceful and just future.

Irving Bernstein, in Promises Kept: John F. Kennedy's New Frontier, argues convincingly that Kennedy did establish himself as a leader who had taken action on the important domestic problems and policies of his time.
