A. The Age of Invasion: Immigration Before 1066

Ancient and earlymedieval Britain was populated by successive waves of immigrants, who came in large measure as conquerors, ejecting or subjugating earlier populations.

The sequence of invasions through the Norman Conquest is briefly treated. Although all invaders save the Romans were Northern Europeans, they brough a wide variety of languages and cultures.

Immigration patterns are traced from Norman times to about the turn of this century. For several centuries after the Norman Conquest, immigration into Britain was very slight. However, British overseas expansion resulted in an increase in immigration.
