The name Mesopotamia was invented by the Greeks and meant "between the rivers," which is where Sumeria and other kingdoms in the region were located. At the time of the rise of Sumeria, most of the people on the planet were living as nomads, roaming in small bands and providing food for themselves by hunting animals and by gathering the seeds and stalks of wild plants. The sumerians changed this with the creation of civilization. This actually took a period of thousands of years as people in the region learned to domesticate sheep and goats and to cultivate wheat and barley. This meant that they could stop roaming and settle in one place, and agricultural villages were established as early as 8500 B.C.
