ely that Rennalls did not agree with Baker throughout the beginning of Baker's statement, he said nothing, which could have been (and indeed was) interpreted by Baker as a sign of agreement. But Rennalls did not agree with Baker, as became obvious in the former's letter of resignation and the extraordinary step he took of including his highly influential father in the process.

During the conversation with Baker, Rennalls used the denial technique as his primary defensive posture. Rennalls acknowledges and appreciates the positive information that Baker passed along, but denied that he had problems in getting along with the Europeans. He even goes to the point of bringing up Europeans who have problems with a particular expatriate, suggesting that the problem is not with himself, but with the person in question.
