Shortly after this move, Emma is on campus and recognizes the student she had seen Flap with in Iowa. She confronts her, and though the girl doesnÆt say much, her fears are confirmed. On the way home from campus, she stops in at the doctorÆs office with her daughter for their flu shots. The doctor finds two lumps under her arm and says they should be investigated. They turn out to be malignant, though we never find out where the primary tumor is. She is sent home, and on her return to the doctor after a few weeks, is told the drugs didnÆt work, and she should get her affairs in order. From this point on, Emma remains in the hospital, and Aurora and Patsy arrive to spend time with her. Even Garrett pays a visit. The children bid tearful goodbyeÆs to their mother, and Flap agrees with Emma that Aurora should raise the children. He professes his enduring love for Emma, despite their problems through the years, and begs
