ormer hostelries had often been build around a stableyard. As cities began to prosper and the American population became more mobile though, improved facilities were created. Perhaps two of the first hotels were the Tremont House in Boston (1828) and the Astor House in New York (1836). These establishments included such attributes as single and double rooms, as well as private meeting rooms. In addition, they also featured door locks, gaslights, and running cold water. Both hotels eventually proved highly successful. As a result, they became the models for similar enterprises located throughout the country (5:1-4).
