Usually, they have to have a strong reason for overcoming the modern human being's tendency to resist writing a letter, an art that seems to have fallen by the wayside even before the invention of electronic means of communication such as E-mail. The Scene is the background for this action, and that background includes the publication to which it has been sent--the writer wants to see this letter on the editorial page for all purchasers of the newspaper to see. The Scene also includes the world of the college and university that the writer is so concerned about and to which he is responding, making use of the newspaper as a way of getting out his message about the college scene.
