Greenbaum and Rader (1989) examined therapy in relation to marital problems faced by older (aged 75+ years) couples and explored various interventions aimed at helping this group.
The authors noted good success (measured using a test of marital satisfaction and self-reports of lessened conflict between the couples) for therapy which emphasized how couples negotiated earlier life stages, transitions, and experiences. They offered several recommendations for how therapists could provide more effective marital counseling to older couples.
