Performance Measures

The three performance measures typically used include written reports, oral reports, and personal observations. The individual responsible for appraising an employee's performance should be his or her immediate supervisor or manager because this person is most likely to be aware of most of the strengths and weaknesses exhibited on the job by the employee on a regular basis. I have personally had two positive and one negative performance appraisals. The positive appraisals combined personal observations and written reports that documented all of the contributions I made to the job and my business unit. In each instance the manager recognized actions that were above and beyond my responsibilities.

Organizations can cultivate a diverse workforce by: 1) securing top managerial leadership and commitment; 2) assessing the workforce; 3) aggressively recruiting and selecting diverse employees; 4) developing employees through training and education; and 5) retaining employees. Diversity training, mentoring, and accommodating multiculturalism help in each of these processes. In a former position that I held, the organization worked with local secondary schools and junior colleges to provide practical internships for minority students, offering successful program participants the opportunity for part-time or full-time employment with the firm.
