Earhart would make great strides in aviation during 1928 and 1929. In 1928, New York publicist George Putnam, who had publicized Charles LindberghÆs exploits, began searching for a woman to fly across the Atlantic. Mrs. Amy Guest, the heiress of a steel fortune and owner of a Fokker F7, funded the venture. Guest wanted to take the trip herself, but her family refused to let her go on the dangerous mission. Instead, Putnam searched the pool of female pilots and discovered Earhart. In 1928, Earhart accompanied Louis Gordon and Wilman Stutz on their flight across the Atlantic as a passenger. Despite the fact that she had no piloted the plane, her fame expanded. She received a ticker-tape parade in New York, congratulations from President Hoover, and was given the title of Woman of the Year.
