Such is the way with moods and emotions in this futuristic view of a depleted Earth after World War Terminus. His wife tells him she is in a ô382ö mood, and when they argue she informs him that if he dials for ôgreater venomö she will ôdial the maximumö in order to increase her chances of victory during their fight (Dick 1996). When TV, an outdated relic, is boring, the number ô888ö is dialed, one that provides the individual dialing it with ôthe desire to watch TV, no matter whatÆs on itö (Dick 1996).

It is in such a world Deckard lives, and he is unable to come to terms with his emotions or those of others. He is upset that his wife would rather feel depressed than simply dial up a number to make her happy. He himself is fond of setting his dial on ôDö because it makes him happy and well-disposed toward others.

As Deckard discovers his supervisor has been seriously wounded by an escaped android, he is thrilled to help find the remaining six of a new breed of android û the Nexus-6. The Nexus-6 is fairly indistinguishable from human beings and only their inability to empathize keeps them from being human. Deckard is tired of having electronic animals, like the sheep he keeps on his roof. However, there are so few real species of animals left that owning a real one is very expensive. Deckard will use his bounty rewards to purchase a real animal.

As Deckard hunts down, identifies and kills the rogue androids, he begins to discover he has empathy for them. The Rosen Corporation builds the Nexus-6 androids. When Deckard visits the company in order to discover more about the workings of this difficult-to-distinguish from humans android, he ends up falling in love with the daughter of the owner of the company, Rachael R...
