In order to remain competitive with other cities, the cityÆs transport system must contribute to the quality of life of the inhabitants. Therefore, its effect on the environment must be carefully managed. Any type of transport that pollutes the environment or exposes inhabitants to other types of toxic substances will be regarded with disfavor, and rightfully so, as it may directly or indirectly cause loss of life. Transport systems must be designed with a view to health and environmental concerns in mind. Cities with a thick layer of smog hanging over them have environments that are deleterious to the health of the inhabitants, and they certainly do not attract people to live there.
