A part-time job is an important experience, one that every college student should have. The main benefit of taking a part-time job is the skills it provides for the career the student will begin after graduation. Learning to juggle studies and a job without compromising either of them is good time-management training that can pay off in starting a first corporate job (Rowh 2003). The maximum benefit, though, comes from the studentÆs getting a job in his chosen career field. That job can be part of the studentÆs job search and a stepping stone to a real job later on. In addition, the student can develop real-world skills in his chosen field that will give him some actual credentials to put on his resumeùsomething most new graduates do not have (Till 2001). He will learn how to handle real-world pressures and projects as well as how to handle the corporate environment (Nigohosian). Finally, the work experience that the student gets in his chosen career field will allow him to move more easily from school to a job, because he will already have one foot in both worlds.
The time-management aspect of a part-time job cannot be overrated. Many college students have difficulty balancing their schoolwork, social lives, and family lifeùlet alone a job. Students IÆve known who took on part-time jobs actually learned to manage time much better, even though they had more to do. One of my friends came from a poor background and had to keep his grades high to keep his scholarship. On top of that, he had advanced courses like organic chemistry that were far more difficult than the average freshman took. He got a part-time job, but instead of hurting him academically, it actually helped. He developed a routine for getting everything done and actually ended up staying up with all his responsibilities better than before.
