The ability to deliver goods rapidly within or between towns had a remarkable effect on trade. Perishable goods could be taken farther, and products could be marketed to a much wider customer base than before. Artisans hidden away in the back streets of small towns could sell their wares to surrounding cities instead of just to the local citizens. Prosperity came into easier reach for the average American.
