ho shared the media developed reality of the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks and reinforced their perceptions of that reality over time through interpersonal communications with others who share the experience and (b) people who did not immerse themselves in the extended mass media coverage of the events of that day and who have not in the intervening 18 months engaged in extensive and on going interpersonal communication concerning the events.

The 30 students in the sample were selected as a convenience sample on a voluntary basis. The first 15 students meeting the criteria for the first group and the first 15 students meeting the criteria for the second group were selected to participate in the study. In each case, they were asked to make self assessments of the vividness of their memories of the events of 11 September 2001 in April 2003.
