Re-entering College

The most difficult problem I have had to overcome is that of re-entering college. Education was always stressed in my family and my extended family, all of whom attended colleges and universities throughout the United States. Although I was never "pushed" into a college education, it was expected that I, too, would attend college and do well.

Like most college students, I began my college career immediately after high school. I moved away from home, and had to learn to budget my time among new friends, new responsibilities, and classes. Perhaps because of my immaturity, I failed miserably, placing more emphasis on the social aspects of college life instead of on the academic aspects. I went into a self-imposed exile from higher education and entered the workforce until recently, when I again returned to school. My academic endeavor this time has been much more fruitful: I now successfully juggle full-time work, my studies and my social life, and am doing well in my classes and at my job.

Through this process, I learned that failure, although painful, can be itself educational. I also learned how to schedule my time, and how to accurately assess my priorities. I take pride now in my academic achievement since I am doing well yet always considered myself an average student. I believe that the lessons in problem solving--assess the situation, develop a plan, implement the plan and make modifications as necessarythat I used to regain my academic footing can be applied to "real-world" situations, as well.
