The very title of Ms. LaDukeÆs work: ôNative North Americaö seems to attempt to prove that the word ônativeö refers more to raw materials to be used for profitable enterprises than concern for the ônativeö populations, indigenous to the land for centuries. One must refer back to the idea of ôlandö as the most valuable asset of any people. But, the land, as originally ôownedö or at least inhabited by Native Americans has now become a victim of American industrialization. In the land of the Mohawks, the destruction of the land is ominous: ôIn two generations, this land of natural wonder has become a place so poisoned that it is not safe to eat the fish or game. In some location, it is not safe to drink the water,, while in others, people have been told not to till the soil.ö (Grinde, p. 171) This is truly a perilous example of what the authors call ôThe Ecocide of Native Americaö. What makes this such a truly inhuman condition is that the authorities do not seem to care. ôàof 18,000 toxic-wasteàsites around the United States, only 8,000 had even been subject to inspection.ö (Grinde, p. 182) The authors point specifically (174) to General Motors as a toxic-waste ôvillainö even though company spokesmen claimed they had the problem(s) under control. Alcoa and Reynolds Aluminum are two other corporations mentioned in the chapter (191) as having polluted some of the streams in this area. Having the Mohawks getting permission to build a recycling plant is closing the door after the horses (or in this case the carcinogens) have already left safe storage facilities.
