Hate Crime Offenders

-term prospects for success (Schafer & Navarro, 2003, p. 3). Many come from single-parent, dysfunctional families, or families that lack adequate supervision (Schafer & Navarro, 2003, p. 3). Notably, however, some research has found that some skinheads label themselves as criminals first and ôhatersö second. Such skinheads find a degree of self-worth in their status as criminals. On the other hand, skinheads who identified themselves as ôhatersö first often lacked the degree of self-worth and personal security found in the criminally-motivated skinheads (Schafer & Navarro, 2003, p. 3). Nonetheless, in the commission of their crimes, both types demonstrate little planning in their criminal activities (Schafer & Navarro, 2003, p. 3).

Under the socialization model, criminologists further categorize some hate crime offenders into two groups of ômission offendersö and ôreactionistsö (Steinberg et. al., 2003, p. 981). Mission offenders are those who believe they are appealing to a higher authority by eradicating an inferior group (Steinberg et. al., 2003, p. 981). Reactionists, on the other hand, base their attacks on a perceived transgression, such as an insult, interracial dating, or neighborhood integration (Schafer & Navarro, 2003, p. 3). For example, reactionist skinheads who encounter a mixed-race couple will often begin my shouting racial slurs. If the couple reacts in a manner not thought to be sufficiently submissive, the skinheads perceive that behavior as an act of aggression and justify their attack on the basis that they were defending themselves against aggression (Schafer & Navarro, 2003, p. 3). On a larger scale, such skinheads often perceive community reaction to their behavior as another act of aggression, filling themselves with the belief that they must defend themselves against all of society who does not think as they do (Schafer & Navarro, 2003, p. 3).
