Nashville's Parthenon Replica: History and Preservation

afoot. According to Robbins, the Nashville's Board of Park Commissioners conceived the idea of constructing a full-size replica out of more durable materials. Thus it was that the original structure was demolished to make way for a concrete replica whose proportions and ornamentation were carefully researched, and great attention was paid to detail.

Project participants made use of the Elgin Marbles, which had been in the British Museum since the early 1800s. Casts of the Marbles were made in Britain and shipped to the U.S., "not only as an exhibit but as study-pieces for the artists who reproduced the finished sculptures now a part of the new Parthenon" (Robbins 47). The finished sculptures that were reproduced had their source in sketches made by French artist Jacques Carrey of the ornamentation
