Attention, Perception, and Consciousness: Examine Four Discrete Areas

neral, e.g., Bushberg, Seiebert, Leidholt & Boone, 2001; Carver & Carver, 2006: Leondes, 2007). X-rays are said to be typically used for diagnostic purposes. It is further noted that x-rays are used to study brain structures related to cognition. Health problems related to x-rays are said to be over-exposure to radiation and the failure of a one-to-one correspondence between cognitive processes and cognitive structure; the latter problem is noted as one common to all imagining techniques. It is stated that, in the future, less emphasis will be placed on x-rays as they will give way to improved imaging techniques. The most common purposes of x ray usage are taken from literature directly related to x-ray imaging specifically (e.g. van Gelderen, 2004).

b) This part of the "Imaging Techniques" section discusses literature pertinent to the CT scan. Supporting references will come from the general imaging literature (e.g., Carver & Carver, 2006). Also, the section delineates the nature of the CT scan and notes that its contribution to cognitive psychology has been to identify and take a clearer look at brain damage; more accurately test theories of brain function and processes; generate theories; and more thoroughly examine damaged areas of the brain and other parts of the central nervous system. The CT scan is said to present a problem with radiation. It is also noted in this section that in the future, CT scanning technology will see safety improvements as well as improvements to its imaging capabilities. The literature supporting these sections consist of both the material on imaging techniques in general and the material directly related to CT scanning (e.g., McCoy, 2008).

c) The final section of the "Imaging Techniques" section of the paper discusses the MRI using the general imagining literature (e.g., Bushberg, Siebert, Leidholdt, & Boone, 2001; Leondes, 2007). The MRI imaging process is described and it is pointed ou...
