Rancher’s View on Wildfires

As a cattle rancher, I am deeply concerned about the incidence of wildfires in the Southern California area. As you may be aware, fires cause a release of greenhouse gases, which in turn contribute to global warming, and that leads to drought; the drought then contributes to more fires ("Fires Are an Inevitable Side Effect of Agriculture"). Every part of this cycle is harmful to my cattle. Moreover, once a fire has occurred, it can take decades for the damaged area to recover completely, leaving my cattle's grazing land useless during that time ("Fires").

Given these concerns, I propose a fire suppression policy that incorporates some new safeguards. Fire suppression in Southern California has not been very effective up until now, and this is because housing and other regulations are developed without an understanding that at least some fires will not be completely preventable. My policy will force landowners in the fire zone to use irrigation methods that reduce dry vegetation and will prevent homes from being built within the fire zone. This policy will be effective because irrigation will prevent vegetation from becoming like tinder that feeds the fire, and not having homes in the fire zone means that firefighters will not have to lose their lives fighting fires to save homes and homeowners but can focus their efforts on stopping the course of a fire. This will reduce fire damage, and thus limit the impact on my cattle.
