The head curator of a museum is generally known as the museum director. Large museums often have curators who specialize in different fields. For this reason, many curators have a master's degree in museum studies and a specialty. Larger institutions may have a separate curator for each of its collections, while in smaller ones a museum curator may perform a number of duties from overseeing collections to administering the affairs of the museum. Curators are similar to museum archivists in many duties, but archivists typically deal with records and documents while "curators usually handle objects with cultural, biological, or historical significance, such as sculptures, textiles, and paintings" (Curators 1-2). Depending on the nature of the position and the nature of the museum, the duties and responsibilities of the museum curator can vary greatly from one position to the next and from one institution or focus to the next.
