ndoned her twins because she felt they would be cursed if she did not. As their daughters move into Americanized houses and marry American (i.e. white) men, the women fear disconnect with their Chinese heritage. When June is younger her mother can control her, "Only two kinds of daughter: obedient or follow-own-mind. Only one kind of daughter could live in this house: obedient kind" (Wang 1993). When she is older June realizes these constraints stem from her mother's past and older ways of life in China.
