Kudler should purchase industry-specific software. Although a specialized AIS is an option, Kudler's products and activities are not really that unique in today's market, and industry-specific software could handle its needs. Automation is Kudler's first priority. Automation would enable Kudler to use just-in-time (JIT) fully automated inventory systems that would not only protect its inventory of perishable foods but would also cut warehousing costs and losses due to spoiled food.
The company's existing systems are too outdated to enhance or maintain, so enhancement and maintenance of those is not an issue. A new system is essential to accommodate Kudler's expansion plans and give the company the flexibility to innovate and add new functions. With the right system, Kudler can integrate its web site with the rest of its operations to allow customers to order food online and execute the order from order entry to payment and shipping. This system would allow A/R, A/P, Inventory, and Payroll to work together seamlessly.
The new system would have to support all of these concepts, so it would be a substantial upgrade from Kudler's existing system. It would need a T1 line in place of its 56K modem to support a fast Internet connection, and wireless capabilities would allow system updates from anywhere in the store, not just the main office. It would also need a security upgrade to handle customer orders and protect all personal and proprietary data from hackers. As Li, Yang, Liang, and Li (2010) point out, "Trust plays an important role in the development, implementation and operation of e-commerce systems."
