The current water pollution levels in China can only be described by one word, serious. As Pan Yue, the deputy director general of China's State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA), said of the situation: "90% of parts of rivers which flow through cities are extremely contaminated. 50% are eutrophicated, and in rural areas 360 million people cannot drink water that meets SEPA standards."[6] Water pollution in China stems from diverse sources and its resolution is hampered by a number of causes as well. Water is polluted by pesticides, fertilizers, effluent run off from farming, domestic sewage and other sources that serve as contributors. More than 150 hectares of cultivated lands are estimated to be contaminated.[7] At the current time there are only a few facilities for environmental protection. Corruption, lack of experience with expert testimony by environmental experts, and poor coordination between local authorities and environmental experts are some of the issues that hamper resolution.
