    Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)

    The Diagnostic Statistical Manual classifies Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) as an Axis II personality disorder (American Psychiatric Association. & American Psychiatric Association. Task Force on DSM-IV., 2000). Characteristic of BPD are significant problems with affect regulation, impulse control, interpersonal relationships, and self-image (Lieb, Zanarini, Schmahl, Linehan, & Bohus, 2004). Another diagnostic criterion according to the DSM-IV is inconsistent mood.

    The exact etiology of BPD is unknown, although it is believed that various factors contribute to the development of BPD. Neurobiological factors might contribute to the development of BPD although these factors are to date poorly understood (Lieb, et al., 2004). BPD sufferers often have a family history of unstable relationships, sexual abuse, family violence, and childhood neglect (Lieb, et al., 2004). Accordingly, it is believed that the symptoms first emerge in childhood. Diagnosis most frequently occurs in early adulthood and females are more frequently diagnosed with BPD than males (Lieb, et al., 2004).

    Treatment for BPD is usually long-term in nature, as symptoms are persistent. Insight-oriented treatments such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy are most frequently used to treat BPD. This specific form of treatment is aimed at changing irrational and unrealistic patterns of thinking and thus bringing about behavioral changes (Lieb, et al., 2004).

    The diagnosis of alcoholism can be difficult, as it depends on the patient's willingness to honestly answer a number of questions related to his/her drinking behavior. Several questionnaires used in clinical practice are available to assess problematic drinking behavior in patients.
