The checklist is designed so that ratings and reports of children's behavior by different informants to include parents are provided (Achenbach & Ruffle, 2000; Buros, 1998; CEBC, 2010; Nova, 2011). It is used to assess the behavior of children to ensure their welfare (CEBC, 2010; ICPSR, 2011; UMDNJ, 2006).

Description. There is a version of the Child Behavior Checklist for ages 2 and 3 years, the Child Behavior Checklist/2-3 (CBCL/2 to 3). This preschool version (CBCL/2-3) includes 100 items regarding behavior problems. There is also a version of the CBCL for ages 4 to 18 years, the Child Behavior Checklist/4-18 and 1991 Profile (CBCL/4 to 18) (Achenbach & Ruffle, 2000; Buros, 1998; CEBC, 2010; Doll, 2010, Nova, 2011). The 1991 Profile is the most current form for ages four to 18 years. The Child Behavior Checklist/4-18 and 1991 Profile (CBCL/4-18) have 113 items related to behavior problems and a seven-part checklist with social competency items. The items on any CBCL provide descriptions of a child's behavior that can be used by clinicians to distinguish between these atypical behaviors and those that would be typical for same-age children (Doll, 2010).
