Unless a job description includes dealing with large sums of cash that could easily be stolen, I would argue that credit checks have little to do with whether or not an individual should be given a job. Employees have certain privacy rights including the right to expect that questions on an employment application or other screening devices have a reasonable connection with the job for which an applicant is applying (Miller & Jentz, 2000). Employees should also have the right to privacy with respect to their finances. Finally, employers should recognize that excessive intrusion into the private lives of potential employees could result in the loss of desirable workers who find such behavior to be unacceptable.
