Management and Leadership at an In-Flight Entertainment Company
There are two primary suppliers of in-flight entertainment systems in the world, and they are located within several miles of each other in Southern California. Management is concerned with the day-to-day operation of an organization, while leadership provides the long-term strategic mission and vision that guides the organization. Both are necessary in today's organizations, but companies often confuse the two, or concentrate on one to the detriment of the other. This company provides strong management training and seminars for its managers, but offers little in the way of training or education on leadership. Leaders provide the overall environment for the company: if the leader values empowerment and delegation, then the organization will, as well. Managers have the same responsibility in that their attitude and approach will define the organizational culture. Managers who hoard information, for example, will encourage similar behavior by their subordinates. Managers who encourage openness and transparency will encourage the same among their subordinates (Cascio, 2005).
