When Ireland and Hitt addressed the issue of strategic leadership in their 1999 article, they recognized the importance of top management teams (TMTs) and the influence those teams exerted on the organization. They also identified six components of strategic leadership that they perceived as critical to success in the twenty-first century: vision, core competencies, human capital, organizational culture, ethical practices, and balanced organizational controls (Ireland & Hitt, 1999).

Boal and Hooijberg published year after Ireland and Hitt and recognized the contribution that Ireland and Hitt made to the traditional view of strategic management. But Boal and Hooijberg took the position that it is necessary to move beyond the framework of traditional approaches to strategic management, and build on those approaches to accommodate the new technologies, new globalization and overall new environment in which business operates. They still emphasize the importance of top management, but distinguish between leading "in" the organization, and the leadership "of" the organization. The latter, they maintain, is the future of strategic leadership and focuses on the social intelligence, behavior and personality characteristics, and emerging theories of leadership (Boal & Hooijberg, 2000).

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is influenced by strategic leadership in that the importance that top management places on CSR has a direct impact on any CSR initiative's success. CSR can be beneficial to firms when evaluated on a cost-benefit basis based on litigation and recall costs, for example, but companies must also be wary of employees who will either not implement the program completely, or who will manipulate the system to produce results that can be interpreted as successful, but which may, in fact, fall short.
