Immigration in America

1. Three immigrant groups that came to America and made a contribution here are the Africans, who came as slaves; the English, who came as colonizers; and the Jews, who came to escape Russian anti-Semitism and give their children a better education ("Main Jewish immigration history America north-east"). Each of these three groups came for some reason, made a unique contribution, and realized their dreams.

The Africans largely came because as slaves they were compelled to. Slavery in any part of the world has historically been a social position of little opportunity and few or no rights, and the African-American slaves held a similar position here. There was, however, a greater measure of racial hatred and oppression associated with African-American slaves than with slaves in many other societies. The slaves contributed to the plantation economy of the South, which was dependent on slave labor, and then as they were freed and eventually escaped much of the oppression of earlier years, they began to make contributions in the arts and in academic fields.

The English colonized the New World and provided initial resources and government to get the colonies started. Their contribution included support from England while the colonies were first starting, but the support quickly turned to taxation without representation and other abuses, prompting the English to forge their own nation here. The colonists realized their dreams, exploring the land and building cities and industry here.

Early Jewish immigrants made a contribution in terms of business, opening tailor shops and other small businesses. Later, the Jews became professionals and academicians as well as bankers and businessmen. They more than realized their dreams, as many large corporations are owned by Jews, and a significant proportion of doctors and surgeons are Jews.
