Styles is a feature in Microsoft Word 2007 that allows the user to create documents in a logical, easy-to-read format. It automatically changes the font size and appearance for titles, headings, subheadings and paragraphs throughout the document. Styles gives a consistent look to a document and makes it more interesting to read (Format your document with styles, 2011). In addition, it is very convenient to use. Different styles can be selected by simply picking one from the gallery at the top of the page in Microsoft Word. With Styles, the user can change the text's appearance (making it larger, smaller, bold, italicized, etc.) without having to use a large number of keystrokes (Format your document with styles, 2011). One might want to use Styles for such documents as business reports, legal reports, or school reports. Styles makes the different section of the reports stand out, thereby making it easier for readers to find the information that they want. For example, the user might select the "title" style for the title of the report. This style causes the title to be bold and centered on the page. To divide the document into sections, the user might select the "subtitle" style.

Styles is similar to Themes because both change the typeface, font size, and color of texts. However, Themes is different because creates an overall look to a document and it can be applied to different Microsoft programs, such as PowerPoint and Excel. Styles is used to change the appearance of specific sections within the document, rather than changing the overall document as Themes does. Used together, Styles and Themes can help people create professional documents (brochures, reports, menus, etc.) that are nice to look at and easy to read.
