In addition to the journals described above, other major references that have been published recently were also reviewed, including the following: a report on the successful implementation of supply chain management at Sumsung's television segment from Business Week, and an analysis of opportunities and issues within supply chain management in the Financial Times. A textbook, Supply Chain Management: In Theory and Practice and a reader on supply chain management issues, Supply Chain Management: Issues in the New Era of Collaboration and Competition, were also used in this review.

The key findings of this review are that supply chain management is, almost by its definition, deeply integrated with systems theory in that external and internal participants influence and are influenced by the actions of other participants in the chain. Another finding is that companies in many different industries are recognizing the complexities associated with managing these systems and are moving to adaptive systems management for their supply chain management needs. A third key finding is that supply chain management is increasingly recognized as a critical success factor that can have a significant effect on the financial performance of a company.
