Deuteronomy 24:1-2 are the two main passages in Hebrew Scripture that pertain to the annulment of marriage between a man and a woman. The following two passages from Deuteronomy 24 reveal that a bill of divorcement had to be initiated by a man, who then ejected his wife from his house:
1) When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it comes to pass that she find no favor in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house; and,
2) And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man's wife.
The above passages also show that once a bill of divorcement was issued, a woman was considered single and able to remarry. Prior to this point in Jewish history, women could be ejected from their home without a bill of divorcement, basically condemning them to a life of slavery being unable to remarry.
