This risk increased when risk factors such as blood pressure and cholesterol were ruled out (Science News 312). Those two studies were among the first important studies which pointed out that those who were forced to live with smokers faced greater health risks than the rest of the nonsmoking population.

Moreover, studies which were aimed at tracking the effect of smoking on smokers also inadvertently began to discover the effects of passive smoke on nonsmokers. One study was directed at measuring the risk of developing cervical cancer by women who smoked. This study revealed two important facts. First, the study revealed that female smokers were three times as likely to develop this cancer as nonsmokers.
