Freud's Case History of Hysteria

an intimate friendship with the married couple Herr and Frau K. Dora'a father reported that Frau K. had nursed him during a long illness, and had earned his undying gratitude (Freeman, & Strean, 1981). Dora had taken care of the children of Herr and Frau K., and had, reportedly, become almost a mother to them (Freeman, & Strean, 1981). Dora's father also reported that Herr K. was kind to Dora, took her on long walks, and gave her small presents (Freeman, & Strean, 1981).

When Dora's father brought her to Freud, he told Freud that Dora was "neurotic," and that she suffered from a nervous cough and a hoarseness of the throat (Freud, 1953). Dora was reportedly an intelligent and an attractive young woman, who spoke freely to Freud during her various sessions with him during the elevenweek treatment period.

The first two incidents in her life that Dora told Freud about concerned the behavior of Herr K. She related them to Freud in reverse of their order of occurrence. The earliest episode occurred when she was fourteen. Herr K. arranged for Dora and his wife to meet him at his office to observe a church street festival. Subsequently, and without Dora's knowledge, he persuaded his wife to remain at home. After she arrived at his office, he closed the window shutters, clasped her in his arms, and kissed her on the lips. Dora reported to Freud that she was disgusted by Herr K.'s actions, and that she tore herself away from him, and fled the office. Although she avoided being alone with Herr K. for some time following the incident, she never mentioned it to anyone else before telling Freud.

The later incident occurred when Dora was eighteen. At this time, as Dora and Herr K. were walking along a lake shore, he professed his love for her, his hope to marry her upon divorce from his wife, and intimated that it had been a long time since he had sexual relations with his wife.
