s, parents, and the students themselves) will be significantly higher in the Routine Clinic Treatment + Transcendental Meditation Condition than in the Routine Clinic Treatment Only condition.

Research Hypothesis 2. In the Routine Clinic Treatment + Transcendental Meditation Condition, treatment efficacy will be significantly higher for students whose parents participate in treatment by meditating themselves than for students whose parents elect not to meditate.

Sharma, Dillbeck and Dillbeck's (1994) Transcendental Meditation treatment program, as applied in this study, will consist of four weeks of a one-half hour transcendental meditation period administered twice-daily.

Transcendental Meditation is a form of meditation first introduced to the West by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. It consists of a technique of focusing the mind, based in part on Hindu

In the proposed student, adolescents will be given a mantra (a special word or phrase) to repeat over and over in the mind. This technique, according to proponents of transcendental will benefit adolescents by relieving stress and inducing a feeling of wellbeing and relaxation. Practitioners claim that if even as few as 1 percent of the population meditated in this way, society would see much less stress and a reduction in the number of problems (including substance abuse) brought about by stress.

In addition to the daily meditation periods, their will be a weekly session held in which adolescents can discuss their experiences during meditation. Every second meeting of this weekly session, parents will be invited to participate in discussions.

Also, those parents who choose will be given brief instruction on transcendental meditation and asked to practice it at home twice daily. In addition to evaluation program efficacy overall, adolescents of parents who elect this option will be compared, on all measures, to adolescents of parents who do not elect this option.
