Substance Abuse Programs for Adolescents

All subjects in the study will be drawn from the population of adolescent (14-17 years of age) substance abusers who, at the time of the study are: (1) first-time admissions to a large local mental health treatment facility; and (2) living in family situations in which their biological parents divorced between six months and 1 and 1/2 year prior to their admission. Subjects are restricted in ages to between 14 and 17 years, and to first-time substance abuse admissions, and to situations in which parents divorced six months to 1 and 1/2 years prior in order to minimize any variance in treatment outcomes that might be due to differences in one or more of these factors.

Subject-Selection Procedures. The first procedure that will be undertaken in the proposed study will be to contact local treatment centers until one gives the researcher permission to conduct the study. Once permission is granted, arrangements will be made to
