Determining how well the ethical code is observed, and whether it is helpful, is necessary to determine if the standards need revision. It is also necessary to know if the individuals in the profession are able and willing to abide by the code of conduct.

The American Psychological Association, a professional organization of counselors, has an extensive list of ethical principles and code of conduct for its members. Other professional organizations have their codes as well. The American Personnel and Guidance Association, the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, the National Association of Social Workers, the National Academy of Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselors, and the American Psychiatric Association all have codes that are similar. The codes (Corey, 1984, p.p. 323-372) all stress the needs of the client above the practitioner, confidentiality of communication, the need to be clear on financial matters, to follow the legal requirements placed on the profession by state and local authorities, and to render some services to the community without regard for financial gain. The American Psychological Association, (the APA), has the most extensive code and will be the primary focus of discussion.

The American Psychological Association's, Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct (1992, p.p. 1597-1611), includes six general principles interest, and eight areas of ethical standards. All the ethical standards, which are enforceable, follow from the general principles which are not enforceable. The general principles are as follows: competence, integrity, professional and scientific responsibility, respect for people's rights and dignity, concern for others' welfare, and social responsibility.
